About the event
Topic:
Indigenous Family Systems: Stories of Strength & Endurance
From a positive, practical, and factual perspective, Denise Lightning, a member of the Samson Cree
Nation and lawyer with over 30 years of practice in criminal defence, child welfare, and representing
children in child welfare matters, will reflect on how different pressures on Indigenous family
structures have impacted Indigenous people since the treaties. Despite residential schools, the child welfare system, and the Indian Act, she will trace how Indigenous families and family systems have adapted into the present.
